Their main difference lies in how the design is applied to the medium. During printing, the card remains held in place on a tray. The ink droplets are then cured by UV LEDs, which quickly harden the deposit.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The process takes place in several steps:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n <li><strong>Deposit<\/strong>: an inkjet print head jets the different colours onto the face of the card.<\/li>\n <li><strong>Curing<\/strong>: UV LEDs harden the ink as printing progresses.<\/li>\n <li><strong>Handling<\/strong>: once curing is complete, the card can be handled quickly.<\/li>\n <li><strong>Prerequisite<\/strong>: the card must be positioned flat and stable on the tray to ensure marking accuracy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Flatbed UV printing is particularly well suited to personalising the face of a card directly. It allows colour printing, and also the use of white or varnish when the machine has the corresponding configurations. This is the operating principle of the printers in Thermoflan&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thermoflan.com\/en\/machines\/uv-printer\/\" title=\"Thermoflan Flatbed UV LED Printers\">range of flatbed UV LED printers<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"le-transfert-d-un-decor-en-uv-dtf\">How does UV DTF transfer work?<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"background-color: #fcfcfc;color: #0d0d0d\">UV DTF printing works on a different principle. The design is first printed onto a specific film, then transferred onto the card to be personalised. It thus simplifies the production workflow when the cards can be correctly positioned on the print bed.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"background-color: #fcfcfc;color: #0d0d0d\">UV DTF, for its part, can meet certain needs for localized transfer. In both cases, adhesion and durability of the decoration must be verified on each type of substrate.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"quelles-cartes-une-imprimante-uv-peut-elle-marquer\">Which cards can a UV printer mark?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"background-color: #fcfcfc;color: #0d0d0d\">A UV printer&#8217;s compatibility does not depend solely on the card material. Its composition, finish and surface condition also play an important role in ink adhesion.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"background-color: #fcfcfc;color: #0d0d0d\">PVC, wood and metal therefore have different characteristics. They can receive text, logos, images and solid color areas.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"background-color: #fcfcfc;color: #0d0d0d\">Adhesion, however, depends on several parameters: the plastic formulation, its surface treatment, the quality of the ink and the printer configuration.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"background-color: #fcfcfc;color: #0d0d0d\">Proper preparation is therefore necessary:<\/span><\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n <li><span style=\"background-color: #fcfcfc;color: #0d0d0d\">Clean the cards to remove dust, grease and residue.<\/span><\/li>\n <li><span style=\"background-color: #fcfcfc;color: #0d0d0d\">Check that the surface is free of marks or defects.<\/span><\/li>\n <li><span style=\"background-color: #fcfcfc;color: #0d0d0d\">Limit the effects of static electricity, which can attract new dust.<\/span><\/li>\n <li><span style=\"background-color: #fcfcfc;color: #0d0d0d\">Carry out adhesion and durability tests after printing.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"background-color: #fcfcfc;color: #0d0d0d\">Flexible PVC cards require particular attention. When the substrate deforms, the ink must be able to follow that deformation without cracking or peeling.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #0d0d0d;\">Thermoflan offers a range of flexible inks designed for applications requiring greater flexibility. The choice of ink must nevertheless be validated according to the substrate and the usage constraints.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"bois-et-metal-selon-leur-finition\">Personalizing wooden or metal cards<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"background-color: #fcfcfc;color: #0d0d0d\">Wood and metal offer other personalization possibilities, but their surface condition must be taken into account before printing.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong style=\"background-color: #fcfcfc;color: #0d0d0d\">Wooden cards<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"background-color: #fcfcfc;color: #0d0d0d\">Raw, varnished, finished or composite wood does not have the same characteristics. Its porosity, texture and treatment directly influence the appearance and adhesion of the ink.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"background-color: #fcfcfc;color: #0d0d0d\">Raw wood may have an irregular or absorbent surface. Conversely, composite or coated wood may offer a smoother and more even face.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"background-color: #fcfcfc;color: #0d0d0d\">It is therefore important to test the substrate to check:<\/span><\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n <li><span style=\"background-color: #fcfcfc;color: #0d0d0d\">The sharpness of text and fine details.<\/span><\/li>\n <li><span style=\"background-color: #fcfcfc;color: #0d0d0d\">The evenness of solid color areas.<\/span><\/li>\n <li><span style=\"background-color: #fcfcfc;color: #0d0d0d\">The color rendering on the natural tone of the wood.<\/span><\/li>\n <li><span style=\"background-color: #fcfcfc;color: #0d0d0d\">The durability of the print after handling.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong style=\"background-color: #fcfcfc;color: #0d0d0d\">Metal cards<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"background-color: #fcfcfc;color: #0d0d0d\">Metal cards can also be personalized by UV printing, provided their finish is taken into account.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"background-color: #fcfcfc;color: #0d0d0d\">A bare, anodized, painted or coated surface does not necessarily have the same adhesion properties. A specific preparation or a compatible primer may be required depending on the substrate.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"background-color: #fcfcfc;color: #0d0d0d\">Care is also needed with highly reflective surfaces. Some mirror finishes can reflect UV radiation back toward the print head and present a risk of unwanted ink curing near it.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"background-color: #fcfcfc;color: #0d0d0d\">Silicone-treated, waxed or water-repellent surfaces may also limit ink adhesion.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"background-color: #fcfcfc;color: #0d0d0d\">In all cases, a preliminary test determines whether the substrate can be printed directly or whether special preparation is required.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"valider-l-adherence-et-la-tenue\">Validate the adhesion and resistance of the UV print<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"background-color: #fcfcfc;color: #0d0d0d\">Before launching a production run, it is best to carry out a full test on the cards that will actually be used.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"background-color: #fcfcfc;color: #0d0d0d\">This test can compare different preparation conditions: cleaned surface, pre-treatment, or application of a compatible primer.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"background-color: #fcfcfc;color: #0d0d0d\">After printing, several points must be checked:<\/span><\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n <li><strong style=\"background-color: #fcfcfc;color: #0d0d0d\">Alignment:<\/strong> <span style=\"background-color: #fcfcfc;color: #0d0d0d\"> check the positioning of the artwork relative to the edges of the card.<\/span><\/li>\n <li><strong style=\"background-color: #fcfcfc;color: #0d0d0d\">Small characters:<\/strong> <span style=\"background-color: #fcfcfc;color: #0d0d0d\"> check the legibility of fine text, numbers and variable information.<\/span><\/li>\n <li><strong style=\"background-color: #fcfcfc;color: #0d0d0d\">Solid areas and outlines:<\/strong> <span style=\"background-color: #fcfcfc;color: #0d0d0d\"> check the uniformity of solid areas and the sharpness of fine details.<\/span><\/li>\n <li><strong style=\"background-color: #fcfcfc;color: #0d0d0d\">Adhesion:<\/strong> <span style=\"background-color: #fcfcfc;color: #0d0d0d\"> check that the ink remains properly bonded to the substrate.<\/span><\/li>\n <li><strong style=\"background-color: #fcfcfc;color: #0d0d0d\">Scratch resistance:<\/strong> <span style=\"background-color: #fcfcfc;color: #0d0d0d\"> assess the durability of the printed surface during handling.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"background-color: #fcfcfc;color: #0d0d0d\">Two standards can serve as a reference for structuring these checks.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"background-color: #fcfcfc;color: #0d0d0d\">Standard NF EN ISO 2409, September 2020 edition, describes a cross-cut test for assessing the resistance of a coating to separation from its substrate. However, this test alone does not measure an absolute adhesion value.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"background-color: #fcfcfc;color: #0d0d0d\">Standard NF EN ISO 7784-2, February 2023 edition, describes an abrasion test using abrasive wheels.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"background-color: #fcfcfc;color: #0d0d0d\">These methods help to better characterise the behaviour of a coating. The protocol must, however, be adapted to the nature of the substrate and the intended application.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"choisir-une-imprimante-uv-pour-les-cartes\">Choosing a UV printer for cards<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"background-color: #fcfcfc;color: #0d0d0d\">The choice of a UV printer depends primarily on the dimensions of the substrates, the materials to be printed and the planned production volumes.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"background-color: #fcfcfc;color: #0d0d0d\">When personalising cards, several technical factors deserve particular attention: the platen surface, the holding system, the print heads, the available inks and the control software.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Large-format printing on a Noca&#xEF; UV marking machine, in a workshop with a computer and work areas.\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thermoflan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/11\/impression-grand-format-machine-marquage-uv-nocai-atelier-8abbf4c2.webp\" title=\"Large-format printing on a Noca&#xEF; UV marking machine, in a workshop with a computer and work areas.\" style=\"width:600px\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"plateau-format-et-maintien-des-cartes\">Platen, format and card holding<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"background-color: #fcfcfc;color: #0d0d0d\">The printable surface is a primary selection criterion. A distinction must be made between the area actually available for printing and the external footprint of the machine.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"background-color: #fcfcfc;color: #0d0d0d\">The main platen formats include:<\/span><\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n <li><strong style=\"background-color: #fcfcfc;color: #0d0d0d\">A4 format:<\/strong> <span style=\"background-color: #fcfcfc;color: #0d0d0d\"> 210 \u00d7 297 mm.<\/span><\/li>\n <li><strong style=\"background-color: #fcfcfc;color: #0d0d0d\">A3 format:<\/strong> <span style=\"background-color: #fcfcfc;color: #0d0d0d\"> 297 \u00d7 420 mm.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"background-color: #fcfcfc;color: #0d0d0d\">The Thermoflan A3MAX UV printer, for example, features an A3-size platen.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"background-color: #fcfcfc;color: #0d0d0d\">The card format then determines how many pieces can be placed on the platen.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"background-color: #fcfcfc;color: #0d0d0d\">For example:<\/span><\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n <li><span style=\"background-color: #fcfcfc;color: #0d0d0d\">A standard business card measures 85 \u00d7 55 mm.<\/span><\/li>\n <li><span style=\"background-color: #fcfcfc;color: #0d0d0d\">An ID-1 format card measures 85.60 \u00d7 53.98 mm.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"background-color: #fcfcfc;color: #0d0d0d\">For this ID-1 format, Decision S2, published in the Official Journal of the European Union on 24 April 2010, sets the thickness of the European health insurance card at 0.76 mm.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"background-color: #fcfcfc;color: #0d0d0d\">In production, using a jig keeps the cards in a repeatable position. It makes loading easier and limits alignment variations from one print to the next.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"background-color: #fcfcfc;color: #0d0d0d\">The number of cards that can be printed per cycle depends in particular on:<\/span><\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n <li><span style=\"background-color: #fcfcfc;color: #0d0d0d\">The dimensions of the printable area.<\/span><\/li>\n <li><span style=\"background-color: #fcfcfc;color: #0d0d0d\">The spacing required between cards.<\/span><\/li>\n <li><span style=\"background-color: #fcfcfc;color: #0d0d0d\">The flatness of the substrates.<\/span><\/li>\n <li><span style=\"background-color: #fcfcfc;color: #0d0d0d\">The precision of positioning.<\/span><\/li>\n <li><span style=\"background-color: #fcfcfc;color: #0d0d0d\">The print head height and clearance constraints.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"background-color: #fcfcfc;color: #0d0d0d\">It is therefore important to reason in terms of the number of compliant cards per cycle, rather than just the theoretical surface area of the platen.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"tetes-encres-et-double-tete\">Print heads, inks and options: technical criteria<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"background-color: #fcfcfc;color: #0d0d0d\">The configuration of the print heads determines the personalization possibilities and the different ink layers that can be deposited.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"background-color: #fcfcfc;color: #0d0d0d\">A print head can integrate several ink channels. Some machines have several heads to distribute the colors, the white and the varnish depending on their configuration.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"background-color: #fcfcfc;color: #0d0d0d\">A dual head does not automatically mean production will be twice as fast.
