This article presents the process, the devices concerned, the inks and their drying, then the qualification requirements. Finally, it gives you the criteria for choosing the machine suited to your production.

How does a medical pad printing machine work?

Pad printing is an indirect printing technique. The design does not pass directly from the tool to the part: it is first engraved on a printing plate (cliché), picked up by a silicone pad, then deposited onto the substrate to be marked. Each step has its own settings.

From design to engraved printing plate

The printing process begins by defining the design, its dimensions and its position tolerances. Once these parameters are set, the design is engraved as recesses on a steel or polymer printing plate. These recesses will then hold the ink at the exact locations of the drawing.

The engraving method depends on the type of printing plate. A photopolymer plate is prepared by exposure and then development. Other plates, by contrast, are engraved directly by laser.

From inking to transfer onto the part

Thermoflan’s Universal machines use a closed inkwell: the inkwell fills the recesses of the printing plate, then its ring acts as a doctor blade to remove the excess ink from the surface. Only the engraved areas remain inked. The silicone pad then descends onto the plate and picks up the image.

The pad then moves toward the part to transfer the design. Its flexibility allows it to mark flat, curved, concave, convex, or slightly textured surfaces. The industrial pad printing machine coordinates the plate, inking, the pad, its movement, and the part holding to repeat this cycle.

Settings and defects to watch for

Marking precision depends on factors such as part positioning, pressure, stroke, contact time, and pad speed. In practice, the advertised performance of a machine does not guarantee that of the finished print. On a curved part, the shape of the pad also matters: excessive speed can make it oscillate and distort the design.

Missing areas or irregular outlines can come from the plate, the doctoring, ink pickup, the pad, or a contaminated surface. If you see smudging or misalignment, also check the pressure and how the part is held.

Which medical devices can be marked?

The soft pad reaches areas that other processes struggle to mark. Pad printing therefore covers a wide range of medical parts, provided their geometry and material are suitable for the process.

From syringes to surgical instruments

Pad printing on a syringe makes it possible to print its graduations, and it is also possible to mark inscriptions on vials and surgical equipment. Other uses of pad printing on a medical device include catheters, fixators, connectors, housings and ostomy pouches. Small characters, logos and markings on components with complex shapes also fall into this category. Thermoflan has extensive experience with this type of marking, with installations at medical industry players.

What information should be printed on the part?

The information to be printed depends on the device’s intended use, its labelling and traceability requirements, and the manufacturer’s technical file. Not all of it needs to appear directly on each part.

Depending on the specifications, the marking may carry several types of data:

Product identification: reference or model.

Production data: lot or serial number.

Symbols: standardised pictograms or logos.

Usage instructions: functional or safety information.

These elements do not have the same acceptance criteria. A graduation, a logo, a reference and a unique device identifier are each assessed differently, particularly for legibility and data consistency.

Graduations and sensitive medical surfaces

On a catheter, the accuracy of graduations is verified by their position, length and orientation relative to the part’s specifications. The tube itself requires evaluation: diameter, flexibility, polymer, but also the effect of printing on sliding, flexibility and surface properties.

This dimensional check matters, because a graduation can remain visible while being too offset or too low in contrast to be read correctly. Its visual appearance alone therefore does not demonstrate its fitness for use.

Why choose pad printing for your medical devices

The soft pad reaches areas that other processes struggle to mark

Machines available in manual or fully automated versions

Compatible with a wide variety of industrial materials

Ideal for small and medium-sized customization runs

Inks and drying for medical printing

Once the design is transferred, the ink determines the durability of the marking. Its selection, settings and drying are determined by the part and the constraints it will undergo.

Choosing based on the device material

Ink choice depends on the substrate, its preparation, drying, and the constraints the marking will undergo. To adjust these parameters, Thermoflan offers ink formulations, solvents and additives. Thermoflan machines print on the following materials, subject to a suitable ink-process pairing:

Plastics: ABS, PVC, polycarbonate, polypropylene and polyethylene.

Metals: certain metals, depending on the formulation selected.

Glass: notably bottles and containers.

Ceramics: depending on the ink and process.

Pad printing on a medical plastic with low surface energy, such as polypropylene or polyethylene, may require pretreatment. Test adhesion on real molded parts: mold release agents and surface condition can alter it.

Formulations and inking parameters

Thermoflan offers Printcolor inks in single-component, two-component solvent-based, and universal UV formulations. The selected family is qualified for the material and the required resistance. On a curved surface, the difference lies in the ink’s adhesion and flexibility when facing the deformations it undergoes during transfer.

In addition to the formulation, ink viscosity and ink quantity must remain under control. Unsuitable viscosity can cause gaps, smudging or irregular outlines.

Drying, curing and final durability

After transfer, the ink dries or cures depending on its formulation. Air drying, oven drying or tunnel drying may be selected depending on the ink and the part.

On certain ABS substrates, the marking can be dry to the touch within 2 to 3 seconds. However, its full mechanical and chemical resistance is only reached after several hours of stabilisation. A part that is dry to the touch, a part that can be handled, and a marking with final resistance therefore represent distinct states. We recommend avoiding intensive rubbing before full stabilisation.

How do you qualify a safe and compliant medical marking?

Marking is a physical printing process. The compliance of the device falls under the responsibility of the manufacturer and the regulatory framework. Qualifying a pad printing process therefore requires knowing the applicable regulations, testing the parts and mastering the workshop.

Identifying regulatory requirements

Regulation (EU) 2017/745 governs the medical devices concerned. Its Article 20 addresses CE marking, while its Article 27 and Annex VI address the unique device identifier, or UDI. Pad printing is not a universal method mandated for applying these elements.

According to the European Commission, the UDI comprises a device identifier (UDI-DI) and a production identifier (UDI-PI). Its marking on the label has applied since 26 May 2021 to implantable devices and class III devices. It has applied to classes IIa and IIb since 26 May 2023, and to class I since 26 May 2025.

For the reusable devices concerned, direct marking of the UDI applies from 26 May 2023 for implantable devices and class III. The deadlines are 26 May 2025 for classes IIa and IIb, then 26 May 2027 for class I; check the class and transitional regime of your product. Since 28 May 2026, use of the first four functional modules of EUDAMED has been mandatory, according to the European Commission. In France, the Decree No. 2026-299 of 17 April 2026 notably adapts materiovigilance and traceability requirements, without prescribing any printing technique.

Inspect the parts and trace the process

Qualification first defines the criteria for position, dimensions, contrast and legibility. It then verifies, on the final parts, the relevant resistance to abrasion, cleaning, disinfection, sterilisation or ageing. In production, print quality is checked on the first article, during the production run and after curing.

These checks feed traceability, which can link a batch of parts to batches of ink, the plate, the pad, the settings and the results. Standard NF EN ISO 20417:2026, published in April 2026, covers the information provided by the manufacturer. ISO 13485:2016, for its part, governs quality management for medical devices, without defining a universal marking method.

Prevent chemical and contamination risks

Inks, thinners and cleaners require a chemical risk assessment under articles R.4412-5 to R.4412-10 of the French Labour Code. For the products concerned that contain diisocyanates, prior training has been mandatory since 24 August 2023, unless their total concentration remains below 0.1% by mass.

Beyond the operator, integrating a machine into a cleanroom must account for particles, solvent vapours, compressed air, cleaning and consumables. A cleanroom class under ISO 14644-1 proves neither the sterility of the device nor the durability of the marking.

Choosing the right equipment for medical production

Choosing a pad printing machine depends on the target output rate, the pad suited to the part, and whether the process is the right choice compared with the alternatives. Each criterion narrows the range of possible configurations.

Output rates and machine automation

Thermoflan offers its range at three levels of automation, each suited to a different production volume. The output rates shown are indicative only and vary depending on the part and the design.

Manual machines: 1 to 2 colours, approximately 100 to 500 parts per hour, for prototypes and small batches.

Universal semi-automatic machines: 1 to 2 colours, approximately 500 to 1,000 parts per hour, for regular production runs.

Automated systems: 5,000 parts per hour or more depending on configuration, for large production runs.

Pro configurations: some print up to 6 colours.

For large production runs, Thermoflan designs with TTN automated special pad printing machines capable of integrating part loading and transfer.

Pad shape and hardness

The shape, hardness and dimensions of the silicone pad influence its deformation, ink pick-up and marking quality on a medical part. This choice is therefore made at the same time as the machine selection.

A pad should always be larger than the design. Low deformation then improves sharpness, especially for reproducing a corner accurately.

Hardness is finally adjusted to the surface. A hard pad may suit textured or recessed areas. Conversely, a softer pad adapts better to heavily contoured or fragile parts.

Comparing marking processes

As mentioned for transfer, pad printing deposits ink from an engraved plate using a soft pad, making it suitable for small curved or irregular areas. Screen printing pushes ink through a stencil and is simpler to apply on accessible flat surfaces. Laser marking works without ink deposit, while industrial inkjet handles variable data.

In the medical industry, choosing pad printing or an alternative involves geometry, material, fixed or variable data, permanence, volume and validation. Also compare the cost per compliant part, which includes preparation, tooling, production, inspection and scrap.

Process

Principle

Suitable use

Point to check

Pad printing

Ink transfer from an engraved plate via a soft pad

Small curved or irregular areas

Ink–substrate pairing, pad settings

Screen printing

Ink pushed through a screen

Accessible flat surfaces

Accessibility of the area

Laser marking

Action on the material, without ink deposit

Marking without ink consumables

Contrast, material alteration

Industrial inkjet

Ink spraying

Variable data

Adhesion, legibility

Find your medical pad printing machine

Syringes, catheters, surgical instruments: Thermoflan offers three levels of automation in pad printing.
